Arriving on Calypso Guide
Overview

Introduction

Your adventure begins at the Shuttle landing site in the bustling outpost of Port Atlantis, or in the cultural city of New Oxford. The location you begin at depends on the choice you made when setting up your account.

The only equipment you have to begin with is your standard orange colonist outfit, some underwear and a pair of shoes. Any other equipment you might want must be acquired through the TRADE TERMINALS, the auction or through direct trade with other colonists.

Port Atlantis

Port Atlantis is located on the south-western coastal region of the Eudoria continent. Stepping off the shuttle you will see four information booths in front of you. By approaching these booths and clicking on the NPC (non-particpant character) there, you will receive some basic information about the Entropia Universe. Information about ACTIVITIES, GETTING STARTED, DEATH & RESURRECTION and FINANCE is immediately available through these booths.

This area also includes Official Entropia Guides. These are real people that can answer any questions you may have about getting started in the Entropia Universe. Just press enter on you keyboard and type any question you have into the chat window. The Guides will be happy to help. Moving further west you will enter the central area of Port Atlantis.

Port Atlantis is a bustling hub of activity. Merchants selling wares will approach you and people may offer to be your mentor. Take your time to look around and chat with different avatars. Visit the RDI building and the natural museum and have a look at some of Calypsos wildlife. The RDI building also has an exhibition of rare robot parts that have been collected by colonists during the years.

By pressing the 'enter' key you can type into the main chat window in the bottom left corner of the screen and communicate with others. Please remain alert to any offers that sound to good to be true - they probably are!

Take your time mastering the Basic Movement Controls. It does take a few minutes to get used to the interface and even the most seasoned computer user will experience something new in the Entropia Universe. Open the ACTION LIBRARY by pressing the Y key and review all the different actions your avatar can perform. Press G to review your current keyboard setup. For more information, read the Movement & Interaction Guide.

Don't forget to ask questions. Everybody was new at one point and the Entropia Universe community are renowned for their helpfullness.

New Oxford

New Oxford is the cultural capital of Calypso. With its fashion and design institute, art academy, music school and multiple art galleries and museums, the city of New Oxford opens new windows of opportunity for artists and designers looking for new ways to promote and sell various Real World art works.

New Oxford is full of shops and interesting sights like the replica of the old-world ship, the Gotheborg, in the calm waters south of New Oxford. Becoming more and more poplular, New Oxford is a great area to begin if your interested in culture. With the introduction of Participant Content (PC), several participant owned art galleries are now flourishing in New Oxford. Please ask around to find these gems.

What next?

Explore. Enter the buildings, interact with the different terminals to see how they work, and once you've mastered these basic controls it's time to find someone that is willing to teach you some of the details - a mentor.

Mentors

The mentor program allows newcomers to receive info and help from veteran colonists. A mentor can help a newcomer out of difficult situations or even simply give advice on which equipment is best to buy based on a newcomers current budget and skill levels.

Mentors can be found almost anywhere, but especially in the main newcomer arrival towns of Port Atlantis and New Oxford. A mentor can only accept a disciple as long as the disciple has very low skills. A potential disciple should have a professional standing of NEWBIE or INEPT. A list of your avatars skills and professional standing can be viewed by pressing K.

You may want to discuss what is being offered by a mentor before accepting or declining a mentorship offer. Remember that if you accept a mentor, you have a short grace period (up to 10 percent of the graduation skills level) during which you can break the mentorship deal, otherwise you are committed until you have advanced beyond your disciple status and graduated.

Getting Started Hints!

  • By using the Space Bar you can toggle between looking around(AIM MODE) and moving the mouse pointer(CURSOR MODE).

  • You can access terminals and interact with other avatars by pressing the right mouse button while aiming at the target.

  • You can initiate the general chat interaction by pressing the 'enter' key, and typing your message in the main chat window in the lower left corner of your screen.

  • The Entropia Universe currency is the PED, which is connected to the real world economy through a fixed exchange rate with the US dollar, where 10 PED = 1US$. Each PED in turn is made up of 100 PEC (Cents). If you need money, there are a range of options available to transfer it into your Entropia Universe account. Detailed information about this is available in the Deposit Section of this website.

There are also many ways for new arrivals to earn money within the Entropia Universe. Sweat may be collected from animals and sold to other colonists for manufacturing Mind Essence. Fruit and dung may be collected and sold to land owners. Oil may be collected at the Oil Rig. Collecting these free resources is frought with many dangers from wild animals and outlaws, but can be an exciting way to begin your adventures on the planet Calypso.

  • Two distinct commercial terms are used when colonists trade in the Entropia Universe. The terms are 'TT + (any amount)' and '(any amount)%'.

The abbreviation TT stands for 'TRADE TERMINAL' - the terminal used to purchase basic equipment or recycle items that an avatar may wish to sell.

In the context of the first term mentioned above, TT stands for this value, as this is the lowest price an item usually sells for (otherwise you might as well recycle it). An example would be the following common phrase: 'TT+2'. This means that the seller expects the recycle value + 2 PED for the item.

When trading bulk items, for example natural resources like iron ingots, the price is usually stated as a percentage of the bulk TT value. The phrase 'Selling Iron 150%' means the seller wants 50% above the recycle value for the stack of resources.
