Taming Animals Guide
Introduction

The first stage of the taming system has been introduced. It allows the Daikiba, Exasaur and SnableSnot creatures on Calypso to be tamed. These animals become loyal companions that will follow your adventures around Calypso, learning new tricks and abilities as your relationship develops.

In order to tame an animal you need to break its free spirit and subject it to your authority and leadership. This is done using a WHIP. Tamable animals display two status bars when they are targeted. The top yellow bar displays the animals spirit and the lower bar displays the animals health. Once you begin to use the WHIP, a third red bar will appear - this is the animals respect for you.

Tools

Important tools for taming are:
  • The WHIP: Available from the auction, the WHIP is used to increase the animals respect and reduce its spirit.
  • NUTRIO BARS: Also available from the auction, this food is the refined product of FRUIT and SWEET STUFF, and you will need at least 200 NUTRIO BARS to feed the animal once it has been tamed.
  • The BRUSH: Available from the auction, the BRUSH is used to increase the animals trust in you once it has been tamed. This will allow the animal to perform tricks and greetings later on.

The Taming Procedure

Begin by whipping the animal until the respect bar is full, the spirit bar is very low, and the health bar is critically low. Be careful not to kill the animal during this process. Choose higher maturity animals as they will have a better stamina. Should an animal come close to death, let it regenerate some health without letting it hit you, as this will cause it to loose respect.

If possible, use a low damage WHIP like the VIPER LIMITED WHIP as this will allow you greater control in gradually reducing the spirit and health.

When the spirit and health bars are low enough, and when the respect bar is full, you may attempt to tame the animal by activating the ATTEMPT TAME action from the ACTION LIBRARY (default key Y). It may be worthwhile to create a DESKTOP ICON for this action as you will need quick access to this action. Read more about DESKTOP ICONS in the Movement & Interaction Guide.

You may not be successful on your very first attempt as you also need to build your own taming skills, but once you reach the initial level you will successfully tame the animal.

Note: If an animal gets hit by a weapon other than a WHIP before it has been successfully tamed, it needs to regenerate to full health before you can initiate a new taming session.

How to Care for your New Pet

Once you have succeeded in taming an animal, three new bars will appear above your new pet. The green bar is your pet's trust in you, the violet bar is its experience level, and the blue bar is its energy.

You can increase your pet's trust in you by using the BRUSH.

Your pet will get hungry and needs to be fed with the NUTRIO BARS. Feed your pet by dragging the NUTRIO BARS from your INVENTORY and dropping them on to your pet. This will ensure that your pet's energy bar remains full.

Your pet's experience will increase as it trains and performs tricks. Tricks are available from the PET section of the ACTION LIBRARY.

Pet Performance

When the pet is no longer hungry and its trust is high enough, you can try to get it to perform actions (e.g. GREET or IMPRESS). These actions are available from the PET section of the ACTION LIBRARY. By performing actions, the pet will gain experience. For each level of experience the pet gains, more actions will become available for the animal to perform.

Please remember that you will need to take care of your pet and feed it on a regular basis. If you fail to look after it in an appropriate way, it will lose trust, energy and experience.

As a colonist with knowledge and practise in taming, your own skills will develop in the following areas: animal lore, zoology, animal taming, courage and intelligence.

Note: In this first stage, the pet level is capped at level three. Higher levels will be added in future VU's.

Stables

If you don't want your pet to tag along, or you want to logout for a longer period, you need to leave your pet in a stable. To do this you need to find a STABLE KEEPER outside one of the cities or outposts on Calypso. When standing close to the STABLE KEEPER you can use the STABLE action from the ACTION LIBRARY.

Once your pet is stabled you will receive a PET DEED in your INVENTORY. To collect your pet again, you need to approach any STABLE KEEPER and activate the PET DEED in your INVENTORY.

Pet Death

If you fail to stable your pet in time, or if no one looks after the pet (you leave it or if you are offline) for longer than 10 minutes, your pet will automatically get stabled. If this happens, your pet will lose trust, experience and energy. Please note that if the energy level and experience of your pet is 0 when you desert it, it will die!

If the pet starves while in stable it will lose trust, energy and experience.

The PET DEED can be dropped on the ground or sold in private trade to other colonists.

PET DEEDS cannot be sold in auction. A tamed pet cannot currently be killed.
